With an abundance of audience participation, upbeat energy and ability to connect with the audience, Scott offers a variety of programs and concerts at libraries, schools and festivals. He also performs at hospitals, special care programs, educational and environmental organizations. Combining his performances with his skill as an early childhood educator, he has earned the praise of many Teachers and Librarians. His upbeat musical style, catchy tunes and lively, friendly persona has earned him fans of all ages.
A little history...
In the mid 1980's Scott studied Early Childhood Education at The University of Massachusetts, Amherst. After college, while working for building contractors in Western MA, he began performing songs at area daycare centers and schools. In 1990 Scott began teaching preschool in the Boston area. This gave him the daily opportunity to write new songs and stories, try them out and his original repertoire evolved. In 1993 Scott began teaching at The Lemberg Children's Center at Brandeis University, Waltham MA. In addition to his performing he continues to teach full time during the school year. Committed to the field of Early Childhood Education, Scott leads workshops for preschool teachers at educational conferences on using music in the classroom. His humor and experience as a preschool teacher has made him a good choice for a fun, educational and interactive workshop experience.
In
1994 Scott recorded a four song demo "Take Four" at Rizzuto Sound
in Arlington MA. Soon after with some of the musicians from the recording
session Scott put together the band "Scott Kepnes and the ABC Band"
which performed a handful of times around Boston with a show at the Somerville
Theater, Somerville MA as a benefit for Pediatric Aids. Continuing to perform
mostly solo and occasionally having special guests (including his two children
Merida and Isaiah)Scott has continued to build up a reputation as a great
performer for children and families.
In
addition to Scott's many solo shows, in 2005 Drummer Dave Shallah
joined Scott to form "The Scott Kepnes Funky Jam Band". Scott's
stage craft together with the talented drumming of Dave has formed unique
chemistry; a high energy, Funky- Rock and Roll sing along- dance along show
for kids and families.
Scott was the New England Region Representative for The Children's Music Network 1998-2003. This grassroots national organization has been a hidden jewel in the United States children's music scene. It is a great organization for anyone involved with children's music including families. Scott is still active with the group attending national and local conferences.
Scott makes his home with his family in Merrimack NH.
